A permanent resident of Malaysia is a person who has been granted permission to live in the country indefinitely. Such a person is allowed to conduct business activities and search for employment without any additional work permits. However, a permanent resident remains a citizen of the permanent resident’s country of origin. On the other hand, a citizen of Malaysia is a person whose citizenship has been officially registered. A citizen of Malaysia is granted full rights to participate in any political activity in the country including the voting process. Citizens of Malaysia are not allowed to be citizens of another country because Malaysia does not permit its citizens to be dual citizens.
